How to Choose a Thesis Topic in Nepal: Feasible, Fresh and Approvable

Students in Nepal often burn a full semester on topic selection — proposing ideas that get rejected, or worse, approved and then impossible to execute. A good topic passes three tests: your department will approve it, you can actually collect the data, and it holds a fresh enough angle to defend. Here's how to check all three before you commit.

Start from data access, not from ambition

The single biggest thesis killer in Nepal is data access. Company financials are often unpublished, government offices are slow with permissions, and busy professionals ignore questionnaires. Before falling in love with a topic, answer honestly: who exactly would give you data, do you have a route to them, and what happens to your thesis if half of them decline? Topics built on publicly available data — NRB reports, NEPSE-listed company disclosures, census data — or on populations you can genuinely reach (students, retail customers, local businesses) get finished. Topics that need a bank's internal loan data usually don't.

Make a common topic fresh

Change the population: service quality is over-studied for commercial banks, less so for microfinance in a specific district.
Change the context: post-merger, post-pandemic, or after a new NRB directive — a recent event creates a genuine gap.
Change the variable: add a mediator or moderator that local studies haven't tested.
Compare: two sectors, two regions, or urban versus rural — comparison adds contribution cheaply.

Check what your department actually approves

Spend an afternoon with recent approved theses in your department library — they tell you the accepted scope, methods and even formatting expectations better than any guideline document. If nobody in your faculty has supervised qualitative research, proposing a purely qualitative study is an uphill battle regardless of its merit.

Size it to the calendar

You have one or two semesters, alongside classes or a job. A focused question answered well — one dependent variable, three or four independent variables, one accessible population — beats a sprawling multi-sector study you can't finish. Your thesis does not need to solve Nepal's economy; it needs to answer one question rigorously.

Test it in one paragraph

Write: "This study examines the effect of [X] on [Y] among [specific population], using data from [specific source], because [gap or event that makes it worth studying]." If you can fill every bracket concretely, take it to your supervisor. If any bracket stays vague, the topic isn't ready.
