It is worth knowing what a similarity score actually measures, because the number alone panics people unnecessarily. Correctly quoted material, your reference list and ordinary disciplinary phrasing all count toward it, so a report can read high and contain nothing wrong. What matters is what the flags point at. Where they point at unattributed text or a paraphrase too close to its source, that is a real problem and we fix the citation and the phrasing. Where they point at your own quoted sources, usually nothing needs doing at all.

A similarity score is not one thing, and only part of it can legitimately be reduced. Correctly quoted and cited material matches by design and should stay. Standard definitions, instrument names, statutory wording and methodology phrases your discipline has no alternative for will match and are normally defensible. What genuinely needs work is uncited text that tracks a source closely — and that is usually a much smaller portion of the report than the headline percentage suggests.
Reducing it means rewriting from the idea, not substituting synonyms. Read the passage, close the source, write what it said in your own words, then add the citation — because a paraphrase still needs one. Synonym-swapping leaves the sentence structure intact, which similarity software matches on anyway, and increasingly leaves an AI signature besides.
Anyone offering to remove plagiarism by running your file through a tool is describing a risk they are transferring to you. Text spinners and paraphrasing tools produce prose with recognisable patterns, and Nepali departments are running Turnitin's AI indicator alongside the similarity score. A report that comes back clean on similarity and flagged on AI is a worse position than where you started.
Turnitin's AI writing indicator is reported separately from the similarity percentage and behaves differently. A submission can show four per cent similarity and still be referred on the AI score. Students who assume a low similarity figure means they are clear are the ones most often caught out.
It is also harder to argue with. Similarity points at a specific source you can open and compare; the AI score is a probability estimate with no passage-level source behind it, and it can flag formal, heavily edited or non-native-speaker prose. That falls hardest on Nepali students writing in their second or third language, and there is no clean appeal against a number with no source attached.
The practical defence is a drafting trail — outline, notes, successive drafts, supervisor comments, with file dates intact. A student who can show three weeks of development is in a far stronger position than one who can only produce a finished file.
Ask your department what its threshold actually is and what the report is configured to exclude, because both vary. The same submission can read very differently depending on whether the reference list and block quotations are counted. A score judged against a figure a senior passed down two batches ago is being judged against nothing.
Two reports at the same percentage can be in completely different positions: one spread thinly across many correctly cited sources, the other concentrated in three uncited paragraphs from a single paper. Only the report tells you which you have, which is why we send the report and go through the flagged passages rather than quoting a number back at you.
Then re-check before submitting, not after. A second run costs little and confirms whether the rewriting worked — a much better position than finding out when the department returns the file. Our Turnitin similarity check page covers what the report contains and how the passages are classified.
Take an illustrative sentence of the kind that turns up in many economics theses written in Nepal: "Remittance inflows have significantly increased household consumption expenditure in rural Nepal, while their effect on productive investment has remained limited." Pasted into a literature review without quotation marks, it matches the source word for word, and Turnitin flags it in one solid block.
The usual panic fix is a synonym swap: "Remittance flows have greatly raised family spending in village Nepal, while their impact on productive investment has stayed small." Nearly every word has changed, but the sentence is the same, with the same order, the same two clauses and the same contrast. Similarity software matches on that structure, so it still flags. It reads worse, and if the swap came from a paraphrasing tool it can now trip the AI indicator too.
A proper rewrite starts from what the sentence is doing in your argument. If your thesis is about how migrant households use money, it might become: "Most remittance income in rural households appears to go on day-to-day consumption rather than on land, livestock or small enterprise (Author, Year), which raises the question this study asks: what would shift that balance?" The idea is still cited, but the sentence is now built around your research question, not the source's wording. That rewrite is what doesn't flag, and it is also a stronger literature review.
