Questionnaire Design for Your Thesis: Getting Data You Can Actually Analyse

15 July 2026 · 6 min read

By the time most students discover their questionnaire was flawed, the data is already collected and the flaw is permanent. A question that confused respondents, a missing option, a construct measured by a single item — none of it can be fixed in SPSS. An afternoon of careful design saves a semester of analytical pain.

Work backwards from the analysis

Before writing a single question, list your hypotheses and the statistical tests from your proposal. Each construct in your framework needs 4–6 Likert items (single-item measures can't be reliability-tested), and each demographic you plan to compare groups on needs a clean categorical question. If a question doesn't feed a planned analysis, delete it — every extra minute of respondent effort lowers your response rate.

Write items respondents can't misread

Adapt established scales where you can

For common constructs — service quality, job satisfaction, brand loyalty — validated instruments like SERVQUAL already exist in the literature. Adapting a published scale (with citation) is methodologically stronger than inventing your own, gives you a defence at the viva, and usually improves your Cronbach's alpha. Note every adaptation you make; the panel will ask.

Pilot before you distribute

Give the draft to 8–10 people from your actual target population — not your classmates — and watch where they hesitate, ask what confusing items meant to them, and time how long it takes. Then run reliability on the pilot data. Every thesis that skips the pilot pays for it in chapter four.

Distribution in Nepal: be realistic

Google Forms shared through relevant groups works for student and consumer populations, but response quality drops when surveys are forwarded blindly — state your target respondent clearly at the top. For professionals (bankers, teachers, managers), personal visits and reference chains still outperform online distribution in Nepal. Track your response rate honestly; you'll need to report it.
