How to Write the Research Methodology Chapter of Your Thesis

14 August 2026 · 7 min read

The methodology chapter is the one supervisors mark hardest, because it is where a study either becomes defensible or falls apart. The test is simple: could another researcher read this chapter and repeat your study exactly? If any step would leave them guessing, the chapter is incomplete.

Research design comes first

State whether the study is descriptive, analytical, exploratory, experimental or a mix, and whether the approach is quantitative, qualitative or mixed. Then justify it in one or two sentences by pointing back at your objectives. A design paragraph with no link to the objectives is the most common weakness in Nepali theses.

Population, sample and sampling technique

Data collection tools and sources

Describe the instrument section by section: how many items, which scale, which variables each section measures, and where the items came from — adapted from a published study or developed by you. For secondary data, name the source, the years covered and how you extracted it. Attach the full instrument as an appendix and refer to it here.

Validity and reliability

Explain what you did to make the tool trustworthy: expert or supervisor review for content validity, a pilot test with a stated number of respondents, and a reliability coefficient such as Cronbach's alpha for scaled items. For qualitative work, describe triangulation, member checking or the audit trail you kept. Skipping this section invites the first question in your viva.

Analysis plan and ethics

Write it in the right tense

In the proposal, the methodology is future tense — what you will do. In the final thesis it becomes past tense — what you did, including any deviations from the plan and why they happened. Students often submit a final thesis with the proposal's future tense intact, which tells the examiner the chapter was never revisited.
