Citation Meaning in Nepali: What a Citation Is and How to Write One

19 October 2026 · 6 min read

Teachers write "citation दिनुहोस्" in the margin and students nod, then quietly search what the word means. In Nepali, a citation is स्रोत उल्लेख or उद्धरण सन्दर्भ — a short, formal pointer inside your text that tells the reader exactly which source a quote, fact or idea came from. This guide explains what a citation is, the two halves it always has, the styles Nepali colleges use, and the mistakes that cost marks.

The simple meaning

A citation is a signpost. Whenever your work uses something that is not your own — a statistic, a definition, an argument, a finding — you mark that spot with the author's name and year, like (Sharma, 2023). That in-text citation points to a full entry in the reference list at the end, where the reader can find the exact book, article or page. The two parts always travel together: an in-text citation without a reference entry is a dead pointer, and a reference entry never cited in the text is padding examiners delete.

In-text citation vs reference list

Styles used in Nepal

APA is the default in most TU management, education and social science programmes, and in many PU and KU departments. Vancouver (numbered style) is standard in medical and health-science theses. Harvard style appears in some management and humanities courses, and IEEE in engineering. The styles differ in punctuation and ordering, not in purpose — all answer the same two questions: whose idea is this, and where can I read it. Use whichever your department's guidelines name, and use only one style per document.

Mistakes that cost marks

Citing is a habit, not a talent: note the full source details the moment you read anything useful, and the reference list nearly writes itself. A free manager like Zotero or Mendeley stores sources and formats both halves for you in whichever style your department requires.

If your reference list is a mess and the deadline is close, Assignment Nepal can check each entry against its in-text citation and put the whole list in your department's style. Message us on WhatsApp at +977 9768768340.

Not sure if your work has plagiarism? Don't worry. Send it to us.

Tell us what you need checked and when it is due. Your document is checked without being stored in any student-paper repository, so the check never counts against your real submission. The reports come back with what each match means, not just a percentage.
