Your teacher warns the class "plagiarism गरेको भए फेल हुन्छ" and everyone goes quiet, but few first-year students can say exactly where the line sits. In Nepali, plagiarism is साहित्यिक चोरी or लेखकीय चोरी — literally, stealing someone's writing or ideas. The precise meaning: presenting another person's words, ideas, data or work as your own, without giving them credit. It applies to a copied sentence, a copied paragraph, a copied design, and even a copied idea structure. This guide explains exactly what counts at Nepali colleges, the forms teachers actually catch, and how to keep your own work clean.
Plagiarism is not only copy-paste. It is any submission where the reader would reasonably believe the work is yours when part of it is not, and you have not said otherwise. If you use someone's exact sentence, that is a quote — it needs quotation marks and a citation. If you rewrite their idea in your own words, that is a paraphrase — it still needs a citation, because the idea is theirs. Only your own analysis, your own data and common knowledge (facts everyone knows, like "Nepal is landlocked") need no credit.
Consequences scale with the level. For a first-year assignment, the common outcome is a rejected submission, lost internal marks or a warning. For project reports and theses it is more serious: departments at TU, Purbanchal and KU run similarity checks before acceptance, a report above the department's threshold sends the work back for rewriting, and deliberate copying can mean repeating the semester. The exact threshold is your department's own rule — ask for it rather than trusting rumour, because it differs between campuses.
A free pre-check takes two minutes. Run your draft through a plagiarism checker, look at each flagged passage, and either paraphrase it properly or cite it — that removes the problems that are easiest to fix before your department's official check.

If a similarity report came back high and you are not sure which passages are real problems, Assignment Nepal can walk the matches with you and show you what to rewrite in your own words. Message us on WhatsApp at +977 9768768340.
Tell us what you need checked and when it is due. Your document is checked without being stored in any student-paper repository, so the check never counts against your real submission. The reports come back with what each match means, not just a percentage.
