The Institute of Science and Technology awards A+ at 90 and passes at C (2.3); the Faculty of Management's semester programmes top out at A, pass an individual course at B minus (2.7), and still require a CGPA of 3.0 to clear the semester. Enter your grades against the wrong table and the number you get is meaningless.
So this calculator asks which faculty you are in before it asks for a single grade. Each table below is transcribed from the published TU document that governs it, and that document is linked under the table so you can check it against your own syllabus.
TU is a federation of institutes and faculties, each with its own Dean's Office and its own examination regulations. Semester programmes were rolled out institute by institute rather than centrally, and each wrote its own evaluation scheme, so the tables never converged.
The practical consequence is that a B+ is 3.3 in both IOST and FOM, but the marks that earn it differ, and the grade that constitutes a pass differs sharply — C at 40 percent in IOST, B minus at 50 percent in FOM. Most GPA sites publish a single 'TU scale' and are therefore wrong for a large share of their visitors.
GPA for a semester is the credit-weighted average of your grade points: multiply each course's grade point by its credit hours, add those up, and divide by total credit hours. A 3-credit course moves your average half again as much as a 2-credit one, which is why the credits column matters as much as the grades.
SGPA is that figure for a single semester; CGPA is the same calculation run across every completed semester. To combine semesters, use the CGPA calculator rather than averaging your SGPAs — a straight average of semester GPAs ignores that semesters carry different credit loads.
Grading schemes are amended, and amendments usually apply to intakes from a stated batch onward rather than retroactively. If your transcript prints a grade this tool's table does not list, your programme is on a different or older scheme and you should use the table in your own syllabus.
Internal assessment weighting also varies — commonly 40 percent internal and 60 percent semester-end for TU semester programmes, but the concerned Subject Committee can change it. This calculator works from final course grades, so that split is already baked into whatever grade you were awarded.
