Paraphrasing Meaning in Nepali: What It Is and How to Do It Right

19 October 2026 · 6 min read

Every Nepali student is told to "paraphrase गरेर लेख्नुहोस्", but few are ever taught how. In Nepali, paraphrasing is पुनःप्रस्तुति or भावार्थ लेख्ने काम — restating someone else's idea fully in your own words and sentence structure, keeping the meaning unchanged. This guide explains what paraphrasing is, how it differs from quoting and summarising, why the synonym-swapping version fails, and a method that works.

The simple meaning

A paraphrase carries the same idea as the source, at roughly the same length, but in wording and structure that are genuinely yours. Two things make a paraphrase legitimate. First, the words must be yours — not the original sentence with three words swapped for synonyms. Second, the idea must still be credited — a paraphrase always needs a citation, because the idea remains the author's even when the words are yours. Paraphrasing without citing is still plagiarism.

Paraphrase vs quote vs summary

A quote repeats the exact words, inside quotation marks, with a page number — use it when the original phrasing itself matters, like a legal definition. A summary compresses a long source into its main point in a sentence or two — use it for a whole book or article. A paraphrase restates one specific passage at similar length in your own words — use it when you need the detail but not the original phrasing. All three need citations; the citation is what separates honest use from copying.

Why patchwriting fails

The most common Nepali student version of paraphrasing is patchwriting: keep the source sentence, replace a few words with synonyms, maybe reorder a clause. Teachers recognise it instantly because the sentence skeleton is unchanged, and similarity software matches it because most of the original words survive in the original order. Patchwriting sits in the worst of both worlds — it reads worse than the original and still counts as copying. Real paraphrasing starts from the idea, not the sentence.

A 4-step method that works

If your own words will not come, a paraphrasing tool can produce a first reworded draft — but treat that draft as raw material: read it against the source, fix what it got wrong, and make the final sentence yours. Submitting tool output unchanged carries its own risk, because detectors flag machine-rewritten text and the meaning can drift.

Tell us what you need checked and when it is due. Your document is checked without being stored in any student-paper repository, so the check never counts against your real submission. The reports come back with what each match means, not just a percentage.
